The arctic circle trail in Greenland did not generate what I would describe as great photos. But it did provide some great memories and stories that go great with some photos. This story starts at about half way through the 100 mile route, when we had suffered enough to make it very difficult for us to consider turning back, but that is exactly a question we had to ask ourselves. We could smell smoke before we could see it, and once we could see it, it looked pretty scary. We were now running into people heading back and telling us we should do the same. We knew the smoke alone was going to be a challenge to hike through, but since there were no trees how bad could the fire be? We also knew the wind direction was very predictable and swapped directions mid day each day. So we came up with a plan; setup camp at a spot we hoped was far enough from the fire, get up in the morning and see how bad the smoke was and make a call to “fire walk” or “turn and run”. Photos clearly show “fire walked” and live to tell the tail. It was actually pretty benign it terms of fires, a bunch of smoldering moss, but a story just the same.
